“Recently an elderly client (who has an impeccable record of tax compliance) received one of those appallingly drafted and unreasonably threatening letters regarding an overdue payment.
I believe the letter included the usual awful headings ‘What you must do’, and ‘What we will do if you fail to respond’.
Needless to say, she owes no money, yet became understandably anxious when threatened with prosecution and imprisonment.
I’ve requested the ATO sort out their mess with their accounts, find her missing PAYG instalment, before sending a nice apology, with flowers.
