27 Jan 1212 On dealing with the ATO (Part 3)

"Two of our clients, a married couple, received notices from the ATO as follows: 'Have you included all of your interest on your 2010 income tax return?' There were 3 amounts of interest that were not included - a large amount from a deposit and 2 amounts of $7 on accounts held in trust for their children. We wrote back and said yes we did omit the large amount but the 2 smaller amounts were from accounts in trust for their 2 children. Accompanying the letter to the ATO were copies of the bank statements where the BSB and account numbers matched those on the ATO's schedules. The account names were the parents in trust for each child. We received an amended assessment for one parent which included the $14 interest. When I phoned the ATO I was told that they had received our correspondence however the statements were dated 2011 rather than 2010. Because they were dated in a different year the names of the accounts may have been changed. Now I am not sure what planet the ATO assessor and officer I spoke to were from but I do not know of any Australian Bank which will change the name of a bank account but not the account number."
