"ATO rings us regarding a client’s outstanding debt. Their first question is what is our Tax agent number? We reply, well, as you rang us, how about you identify yourself before we give out our confidential info? After all, how do we know who you are? Stalemate ensues for 5 mins with the ATO going on about what the issue is and that we need to tell them what they want. In the end they give us a call back number. Is there any guidance from the ATO on exactly what their procedures are supposed to be to ensure that we don’t inadvertently give out confidential information and probably contravene tax and privacy laws?"
