I was investigating a client on our lodgment list that according to our lodgment list has not lodged since 2008. I checked the Portal and it recognizes the client's tax file number as being one of our clients but when I chose to access his 'Lodgment Status' I am informed that the 'Details will not be displayed', further if I chose to print a Prefill I am advised to 'enter a valid TFN'. From these 2 facts we are to conclude that the client has either i) lodged his returns personally via etax or ii) gone to another Tax Agent. It is NOT CLEAR that either of these are correct conclusions.
Surely the ATO can simplify this process by either issuing a notice when we enter the TFN advising that the client is no longer on our lodgment list. That would save Tax Agents enormous amounts of time chasing up the status of lost clients and benefit the ATO by making our lodgment lists more realistic."
