"I want to provide some feedback on proposed GST grouping changes, which have not progressed passed the drafting stage. There is some exaggeration in this story of course but it is a real issue that impacts on us and other large corporates.

'The paperless office is dead! I've got tens of BAS to lodge, not one, I need another ream of paper, now!'

OK, so a bit of exaggeration, but the point is, the promised GST grouping changes which would have saved our collective lives is not in sight. On 20 January 2011, the Assistant Treasurer released draft legislation which promised to expand the use of GST groups. An easy win, or so it seemed, to reduce compliance costs for business. The number of BAS to be lodged would be slashed.

The GST grouping changes have not since progressed. Instead we are talking about GST refunds (the proposed Division 36).

Meanwhile, we groan as we lodge many separate BAS where one should really do."
