"I note that qualified accountants working as contractors have not sought registration as Registered BAS Agents, their duties are producing the accounting reports and lifting the information off the report to the BAS.
They are close to part time employees (for income tax purposes their fee would Professional Service Income), they are not accountants carrying on a bookkeeping business. The BAS is lodged electronically, under the name of the Public Officer.
It is not the quality of their work I question, it is the status of the Contractors. Are they excluded from the definition [of providing a BAS service]? As a Tax Agent and as an auditor...is it any of my business? In my relationship with my client, do I doubt in the integrity of the Contractor, or is this a matter for the Tax Practitioners Board to have a clearer definition and guidelines?
Another question: what is 'preparing a BAS' and how far do you drill down?"
