“Just when you think the level of incompetence at the ATO couldn’t get much lower, they go and exceed themselves!
Twice last week we had calls from clients concerned that they had received letters from the ATO saying their ABN and TFN would be cancelled unless they returned a form confirming the SMSF had assets and was legally established! This is all well and good, if the ATO had only bothered to check their own system, which would’ve confirmed the clients in question had lodged their SMSF tax returns 8 weeks earlier and been issued a refund, all before their lodgment due date!
The ATO letters also went to the trustee’s home address, even though we are recorded as the tax agent and are the clients’ registered postal address!
Thank you ATO for your continued efforts to work with tax agents in upsetting the clients, wasting tax agent time and wasting ATO time and resources. What hope do we have of the Portal technology ever working properly when the ATO can’t even take the basic step of checking their system before sending letters.
