On TFN privacy - the ATO responds
THE ATO RESPONDS to the feedback from Member 92 in last week's edition of TAXVINE - see 2014 TAXVINE No 26 (25 July 2014):
"Thank you for your feedback about tax file number privacy and the suggestion to hide it on ATO correspondence.
As a result of this and other feedback we have received, we are currently considering the need for tax file numbers to be displayed on our correspondence, including:
• the actual risk of compromised tax file numbers as a result of paper correspondence
• the opportunity to make changes to our current systems to support potential changes to correspondence , and
• the future design of correspondence as part of our broader digital strategy.
We are also developing the design framework for the ATO to interact with taxpayers and intermediaries electronically in line with the broader government Digital First Strategy project team. Any outcomes from our work regarding tax file number privacy will be forwarded to the project team for their consideration for further consultation and design.
