MEMBER 56 writes, in response to Member 41's comments in last week's TAXVINE - see 2012 TAXVINE No 7 (9 March 2012) - about arbitrary assessments following lengthy delays involved in the "12 week review" process:

"In response to Member 41, I have had almost the identical issue with 2 clients and the '12 week reviews' in that they have finally come back after 6 months with amendments and no reasoning at all. They both had a contact name though, and I was advised to contact the ATO switchboard on 132869 and ask for that person. In both instances I spoke to the correct person and they advised the reasons for amendment. I then had something to object about which I have now done (all they needed was further info) and have to wait a further 2 months etc, when a 5 minute call from the person reviewing the case would have finalised it. Good luck!"
