21 Apr 11 On the ATO's attitude to taxpayers during audits

"Well shut my mouth!!! I’ve just read about the Commissioner in a seminar defending his Department's actions in the aggressive and sometimes threatening pursuit of taxpayers during audit action. It makes interesting reading that the Commissioner contends his polling & questionnaires to the public (including tax agents) reveals the public's full satisfaction and support of this attitude. I and several of my fellow tax agents (whom I've talked to) have recently completed said ATO questionnaires where all to a man & woman have pilloried the ATO over its performance in many areas. Where does the Commissioner get his feedback from? I've got to ask? This seems like another case of the 'Emperor's New Clothes' scenario all over again, just like the 'Change System' fiasco.
By the way, has there been any light shed by IGOT into their ages ago announced review of the ATO Change System - there's a deafening silence out here in Tax Agent World waiting patiently for its unalloyed and frank findings. I'd hate to think it got run down by a truck full of whitewash paint!!!"
