25 Mar 11 On voluntary disclosures about nothing

"My client and I have recently received a letter from the ATO entitled 'Delay in the processing of your 2010 income tax return'.

The letter states all the nasty things the ATO can do if you don't make a voluntary disclosure about 'Original amount' items claimed in your 2010 tax return. There is a schedule attached entitled 'Return information - details of the adjustment(s)'.

The problem is that the attached schedule is blank! The client has not made any claims at all in the 2010 (or 2009) tax return having a very simple financial situation.

The client called me immediately. I called the ATO for an explanation but none could be given. Client and my time wasted, 3 hours.

The concerns I have, apart from the obvious, is the tone of the letter, the client's lack of making any tax deductions, so why was he chosen? Scary?

Is anyone else receiving these letters?

Please keep up the good work, I find the TAXVINE Newsletter very informative. The Member Feedback is invaluable."
