This week the Inspector-General of Taxation (IGOT) opened his consultation process for the 2011-12 work program. The IGOT reviews Australian Tax Office administered taxes including, superannuation, excise and grant schemes. The IGOT is able to review tax administration policy, but not specific tax policy issues in terms of who, what & how much is taxed. From member feedback it is clear that the the IGOT should be considering in this work program issues including: benchmarks, debt collection and service standards. The Tax Institute will be formally consulting with the IGOT on the work program and we welcome your views and input into this process; please contact us at [email] before February 2011. It is also encouraging to see that last week the IGOT delivered his report on the ATO Change Program to the Assistant Treasurer. We await the release of this report and the Government's response in the coming months. In the meantime, you can view the Tax Institute's submission to the IGOT's review of the Change Program here
