20 Aug 10 Preamble - Friday, 20 August 2010
With the five week election campaign drawing rapidly to a close, a clear result from the general election tomorrow will provide the composition of the 43rd Parliament of Australia. The caretaker period of government will cease when the election result is clear, or if there is a change of government, when the new government is appointed. The Parliament may meet as soon as the formal election documents (the writs) are returned to the Governor-General and no later than early December; given this, it is likely that Parliament will convene in September this year.
As the Taxation Institute is on record as saying, both sides of politics have not tackled the real business of tax reform during this election campaign. With the swearing-in of a new government, we look forward to continuing to represent Members' interests and advocate for a better tax system with whichever party forms government.
