This week we met with the Inspector General of Taxation, Mr Ali Noroozi, to discuss the development of his forward work program. The Inspector General serves to review the tax administration system by reviewing systemic issues and making recommendations for improvements.
We put a number of issues forward to the Inspector General, based on the emails we have received through TaxVine Member Feedback, as well as members who have contacted the Tax Policy team. One of the most challenging administrative issues facing members is the ATO's use of small business benchmarks in cash economy audits. Concerns have been raised about how the benchmarks are formulated, as well as how they are applied to taxpayers. Members have also raised numerous concerns about the ATO's service standards. Many members express frustration at the ATO for raising expectations that the service standards will be met and the lack of accountability when they are not met. The Inspector General should examine the ATO's outsourcing of small business debts, the application of the accountants' concession and the ATO's communications following judicial decisions.
We are currently drafting our formal written submission about the Inspector General's forward work program, so if there are any other issues that you would like raised, please contact us at Tax Policy.
Please see below for other activities this week.
