01 Apr 10 Preamble - Thursday, 1 April 2010With the continuing ATO refund delays (see discussion below), this week we have raised members' frustrations directly with the Treasurer's Office. The Prime Minister has also been asked about the issue on radio and he committed to having the Treasurer go through the complaints that have been made and advise how they will be rectified. On the issue of financial planners and the Tax Agent Services Regime, we have followed up our written representations to the Assistant Treasurer with both the Minister's office and the Treasury.
The High Court also delivered its judgment in the much anticipated Bamford case on Tuesday, which allowed us to publicly highlight the need for legislative reform to the taxation regime for trusts. http://www.taxinstitute.com.au/media-releases/high-court-decision-means-government-must-legislate-on-trusts. Also this week, the National Tax Liaison Group had its first meeting for the year on Wednesday (see below).
