Still no one has addressed the issue for the micro-business person who cannot read and write and therefore cannot use the internet and participate in single touch payroll (STP) for their employees. I guess this will have to be taken up by the Human Rights and Equal Opportunity Commission who has at least recognised the impact of technology on those who cannot read.
I can recall when working in the ATO in the 1980’s, they prepared wonderful letters and pamphlets for the recently arrived boat people from Vietnam to explain their tax obligations.
The response to the ATO from the community centres was the information was great, clear and concise; however, the majority of the Vietnamese boat people could not read so there was little or no benefit.
It’s very sad to see that this lesson has still not been learned by the ATO.
