The ATO advises that people who have received an income tax bill for 2011-2012 should pay any amount owing by the due date to avoid incurring interest for late payment.

Payments can be made by:

  • BPAY either over the phone or internet
  • direct credit or debit
  • cash (up to $3,000), cheque or EFTPOS at any Australia Post Office, or
  • mailing the payment slip with a cheque or money order to the address printed on the payment advice slip.

If the debt is less than $25,000, the taxpayer can use the ATO’s 24-hour automated service to arrange a late payment or to pay by instalments. To use this service, phone:

  • businesses - 13 72 26, or
  • individuals - 13 28 65.

Alternatively, taxpayers can phone the ATO on 13 11 42 between 8.00am and 6.00pm, Monday to Friday, to discuss their situation.

People who are preparing their own 2011-2012 returns but have not yet lodged them should do so as soon as possible.

While the deadline for self-lodgment was 31 October, e-tax will continue to be available to download free of charge from the ATO website.
