Fake tax agent fined $40,000

The Federal Court of Australia has fined Ms Arlene Caolboy $40,000 for unlawfully providing tax agent services to approximately 350 taxpayers over the past four years and for advertising online and telling taxpayers she was a registered tax agent. 

The Court also imposed an injunction on Ms Caolboy, preventing her from providing tax agent services or BAS services for the next three years whilst she remains unregistered with the Tax Practitioners Board.

BAS agents authorised to offer expanded super guarantee charge services

Following extensive consultation with key stakeholders, the Tax Practitioners Board has registered a new BAS services legislative instrument, Tax Agent Services (Specified BAS Services No. 2) Instrument 2020.

The new legislative instrument allows BAS agents to provide an expanded range of services in relation to the superannuation guarantee charge, including supporting clients in their interactions with the Commissioner of Taxation.
