On 10 April 2015, the Tax Institute lodged a submission to the South Australian Tax Review discussion paper which was released in February 2015.
In summary, the submission stated that the South Australian Government needs to:
- explore the abolition of those state taxes that are inefficient (which distorts behaviour) and volatile (which is inappropriate for the Government to base its expenditure programs upon)
- commit to a dialogue on the GST (rate and base).
This may be a once in a generation opportunity to undertake reforms to benefit the South Australian economy and appears to be the first step in a process that needs to be coordinated with any Federal reforms.
If members have any input in respect of reforms proposed by the South Australian government, they should contact their local state office in the first instance. If members have any input in respect of the Federal Tax White Paper process, please contact us at Tax Policy.
