For the 2007-08 income year:
- 14.8 million returns were lodged, an increase of 6.7% from 2006-07
- individual returns represented 85.2% of all returns lodged
- trusts experienced the largest growth in the number of returns lodged, with an increase of 8.3% from 2006-07
- the proportion of individuals lodging returns using e-tax increased to 17.7%.
The Assistant Treasurer said: "The statistics...reinforce the Rudd Government's view that the tax system is too complex and costly for everyday Australians with normal tax affairs. In 2007-08, the average cost for managing tax affairs by an individual increased 12.4% to $301.34 per person."
