12 Mar 10 Taxation Institute in the mediaThe Taxation Institute was quoted in response to the Government announcing that it had no timetable in mind for the release of the Henry review and its response - the Australian Financial Review on Friday, 5 March 2010 “Rudd steers talk away from tax review”; the Herald Sun on Friday, 5 March 2010 “Tax delay attacked”; and The Australian (online) 4 March 2010 “Alarm as Rudd sidelines tax reform”
I was also interviewed by Ross Greenwood on radio 2GB’s ‘Money News’ program on 4 March, where I reiterated that the Government must release the Henry review and the Government's response. Key messages included: it is a unique opportunity for significant, structural changes that will better position Australia to deal with the challenges of the 21st century. The Henry tax review, as Treasurer Wayne Swan has said, forms a key part of a "once in a generation opportunity to modernise our economy and secure our prosperity". The Taxation Institute continues to strongly advocate for meaningful tax reform and calls on the government to reaffirm tax reform as a key priority.
The Australian Financial Review published a letter from the Institute on 10 March: “Advisers must meet standards”. This letter called on the Federal Government to ensure taxpayers are protected from potential risks, by ensuring all parties (including financial planners) that provide tax advice are covered by the new Tax Agent Services Regime.
