In the articles, we commented on the $1,000 GST-free import threshold and the need to balance the compliance costs involved in collecting low-value amounts of GST.
The Taxation Institute was also quoted in the Australian Financial Review on Wednesday 8 December: 'Business fuel hard look at ATO'. In the article, we stated that in the context of his forward work program, we would like the Inspector-general to look into benchmarking: where the Tax Office targets what it perceives to be businesses at risk of not paying all their tax. Also that day in the Australian Financial Review we welcomed the Government's announcement of de-merger relief as the existing rules have caused difficulties in a number of transactions.
On Thursday 9 December, the Australian Financial Review quoted the Institute on the Full Federal Court Decision in Sunchen'Qantas's GST appeal grounded'. The decision gives some clarification to the hugely complex area of GST and residential premises.
