The Australian Financial Review quoted the Taxation Institute on Thursday 3 February 2011: "Tussle over independence of Tax Board" in respect of the Government's announced Tax System Advisory Board to advise the ATO on governance matters. Specifically, the comments relate to the method of appointment of the Board, their accountabilities, and the Commissioner of Tax being Chair. We say that as long as the appointments to the Board are made by the Treasurer and they are accountable to the Treasurer in respect of their duties, the design should function well. This will ensure that the Board is free to provide frank and fearless advice to the Commissioner on the operation of the Tax Office.
