“Today I received a penalty notice for a client of mine:

Income Year: 2013

Lodgment Due Date: 28 April 2014

Date Received: 10 April 2014

My client’s 2013 income tax return was due for lodgment on or by 31 March 2014 but with the self assessment deferral system working so well, we applied for and received a +four week extension.

The ATO obviously received the deferral request and correctly updated the due date as 28 April 2014, but alas no one could stop the $800 million machine from spitting out incorrect penalty letters.

When the ATO come calling, I can tell them the real reason I can’t meet my 85% lodgment deadlines is having to deal with this sort of rubbish day in day out.”
