The Tax Institute published an opinion article in The Australian Financial Review on Tuesday 10 January 2012: “Simple, right? Not when it comes to tax”. The article discussed the pace of change in tax law. If you are not an AFR subscriber and would like a copy of this article, please email us at Tax Policy.
The Tax Institute was also quoted on Tuesday 10 January 2012 in The Australian Financial Review: “Tax Board should advise not oversee, say experts” concerning the Tax System Advisory Board for the ATO. In the article, The Tax Institute says that the Board is a positive change and its advice on human resources, IT and governance would be useful. It’s not about derogating from the Commissioner’s powers, it’s another source of advice.
We were also quoted in The Australian Financial Review on Wednesday 18 January 2012: “Keep us in the loop, advisers say”. The Tax Institute says that the Commissioner’s eagerness to communicate directly with clients is fine and we do not think there is any danger the talks will cut out advisers completely. No one should or can stop the ATO from doing that, but it’s important that everyone acknowledges the value advisers can add.
