31 Jul 13 Treasurer promises a 5 year freeze on superannuation changes

In media release No 2013/012, issued 31 July 2013, the Treasurer, Chris Bowen, said that a re-elected Rudd Labor Government would make no major changes to superannuation tax policy for a five-year period, commencing immediately.

The Government will also bring forward legislation to establish the Super Council to ensure any future changes to superannuation are consistent with an agreed Charter of Superannuation Adequacy and Sustainability. The Charter will include the commitment to a five-year moratorium on changes to superannuation tax policy.

The Government will make an announcement on the membership of the Council in due course.

Treasury has released the report of The Charter Group, chaired by Jeremy Cooper. The Charter Group was appointed on 9 May 2013 to develop and recommend a Charter of Superannuation Adequacy and Sustainability and to develop and recommend an appropriate structure for a Council of Superannuation Custodians.
