"Taxpayer lodged return in October; assessed in November; refund applied to integrated client account debt on the 'issue' date at the client's request. The client is waiting on the assessment notice to receive lump sum family tax benefits, which will be applied in part to extinguish the remaining ICA debt, and the remainder to have been used to pay school fees and the like. The assessment has still not issued, despite the Portal indicating that it has. Enquiries with the ATO since November (escalated multiple times) reveal that the assessment has not been sent due to a 'technical issue'; no disclosure given as to what that technical issue may be, either verbally or in writing (yes, we did receive a letter). I'm not quite sure how we are meant to do our job. I can't help but get the feeling that 'trust' and 'communication' have broken down, and that 'paranoia' and its mate, 'confrontation', have taken their place. Such a culture shift does not bode well for the future."
