The Tax Institute runs over 300 CPD seminars a year and the majority of our speakers dedicate considerable time and effort in preparing and writing papers and presentations. All papers and powerpoint presentations provided by the speakers from our seminars are available through the website individually or through a Tax Knowledge eXchange subscription.

    This year’s Federal Budget delivered some of the most significant changes to superannuation for many years. These announcements along with the amendments that followed mean that no existing super strategy developed for clients can be assured of being either appropriate or compliant. This event covered the following topics:

    • super contributions in a changing world
    • pension strategies for your clients in 2017
    • SMSFs and the ATO - a partnership between rrustees, professionals and the regulator.

  • International Masterclass

    23 Nov 2016 | RACV City Club, Melbourne | VIC

    Over the last 12 months, cross-border transactions have continued to come under increasing scrutiny on multiple fronts:

    • while the OECD has continued working to devise solutions to address
    • base erosion and profit shifting, Australia has introduced new laws, and is proposing to introduce further laws, targeting multinational tax avoidance
    • new administrative regimes have commenced, with a focus on taxtransparency and which provide the Commissioner with greater powers for the collection of tax on cross-border transactions
    • the Australian Taxation Office has undertaken, and is currently undertaking, several significant audits in relation to transfer pricing and profit shifting, with the potential for litigation
    • some states have introduced additional imposts on foreign purchasers and owners of interests in Australian land
    • The High Court of Australia has been giving substantive consideration to the concept of 'central management and control' for the first time in over 40 years!
    • This event presented perspectives on these important developments from senior representatives from private practice, the ATO and the Victorian Bar.

  • Foreign Purchaser Duty and Land Tax Changes

    This webinar consisted of an overview of foreign purchaser surcharge across all three States, highlighting the main similarities and differences. A number of key issues were explored including:

    • who is caught as a “foreign person”
    • when is property considered residential
    • what continued monitoring is required after the transaction
    • what to look out for as part of a due diligence
    • how does the surcharge apply in a land tax context
    • what exemptions may be available.

  • 2016 SA Agribusiness Day

  • The Family Chess Game

    Family disputes over trusts and estates are becoming commonplace as parents become old and frail, incapacitated, or pass away. Potential disputes and areas of conflict need to be anticipated and avoided through careful planning. These issues were discussed at this event.
