The Tax Institute runs over 300 CPD seminars a year and the majority of our speakers dedicate considerable time and effort in preparing and writing papers and presentations. All papers and powerpoint presentations provided by the speakers from our seminars are available through the website individually or through a Tax Knowledge eXchange subscription.

  • Tax Practitioners Board: Will You Survive an Investigation?

    A client has emailed you through a summary of their records. Is that enough for you to rely on when doing their tax work? Part of the Tax Practitioners Board’s role is to ensure that tax agents are doing the right thing. The problem is that many tax agents may be unknowingly and inadvertently breaching the Tax Agents Services laws and regulations. This event covered such issues as:

    • to what extent must a tax agent act as the “gatekeeper” for the ATO?
    • how have the Board and the courts interpreted the fit and proper person test?
    • use of contractors, lodging returns for other non-registered practitioners, operating from more than one office and outsourcing work
    • recklessness versus exercise of reasonable care – where do you draw the line?
    • how far do you need to go to properly identify the client and substantiate their instructions/information?

    This event covered a range of tax issues that confront us in the ever-changing environment we work in. It looked at how to deal with the ATO, single touch payroll, new changes to the superannuation small business rollovers, employee share schemes, intellectual property and UPEs.

  • SMSFs and Retirement Planning

    As well as having an exit strategy in place for the business, your client needs to plan their ‘life after retirement’. This event provided an overview of superannuation law focussing on current compliance issues, tips and traps with using a self-managed superannuation fund (SMSF) and tax issues surrounding super contributions and drawing pensions. This event also briefly discussed passive investment activities of SMSFs and borrowing rules.
