The Tax Institute runs over 300 CPD seminars a year and the majority of our speakers dedicate considerable time and effort in preparing and writing papers and presentations. All papers and powerpoint presentations provided by the speakers from our seminars are available through the website individually or through a Tax Knowledge eXchange subscription.

  • Taxation of Startups: Recent Developments

    Australian startups remain in the spotlight with the Government continuing to pass favourable tax and regulatory reforms in this space. Prime Minister Turnbull's "innovation agenda" continues to roll on. If you aren't already across the startup tax reforms for employee share schemes and tax incentives for investments in early stage innovation companies, now is the time to catch up.

    • an update on the new tax incentives for investments in early stage innovation companies, including recent ATO consultations on some tricky technical issues and the legislative reform to fix the CGT event E4 problem

  • State Taxes - Duties and Provisions

    As we approach the end of another financial year, taxpayers will be looking to their advisers for assistance in completing their year-end transactions; typically involving the transfer of property into or out of trusts and SMSFs and entity restructures. The pivotal issue for many of these transactions is whether there are any transfer duty exemptions or concessions available to the taxpayers. This covered a practical approach to assisting advisers on:

    • determining the availability of common exemptions and concessions
    • to manage the assessment process (including liaising with the Office of State Revenue) to get the best and most efficient outcome for their clients.

  • National Infrastructure Conference

    Investment in infrastructure is critical for maintaining living standards and creating the conditions in which our economy can continue to grow. Governments in Australia are increasingly looking to the private sector to develop and maintain roads, ports, pipelines, power and other essential infrastructure assets. The recent releases of a Tax Framework Document and Tax Alert on staples means there is much to debate.

    This event covered many issues that are relevant to our industry, including privatisation issues, debt/equity rules/Div 855/Div 6C interaction, applying anti-avoidance rules to staples, social infrastructure update, gifted assets and valuation.
