Sharia compliant, or Islamic, financing has been said to hold great potential for Australia in terms of wealth and job creation and as a means of accessing offshore capital pools. In order for these financing techniques to develop here, the uncertainty and complexity in tax treatment will need to be addressed. This article provides a description of some Islamic financing structures, observations on the Australian tax issues posed by these structures and how tax issues with these structures have been addressed in the UK.
