State tax reform: State tax reform and GST

Published on 01 Apr 13 by "TAXATION IN AUSTRALIA" JOURNAL ARTICLE

The following is an edited transcript of the presentation by the then South Australian Treasurer, the Hon. Jack Snelling, MP, at The Tax Institute/Australian Tax Research Foundation’s event, Revolutionising state taxes — finding a way forward, held in Adelaide on 13 December 2012. Treasurer Snelling discusses the findings of the GST distribution panel and how these impact on the South Australian and wider economy. He goes on to suggest a broader review of the GST, investigating both the rate and base. He considers several of the different types of taxes which comprise the South Australian tax base and how state tax reform could occur.
