Abstract:
This video is a filmed session from the 31st National Convention, PowerPoint slides are incorporated with the presentation.

Senior Australian Taxation Office (ATO) representatives were invited by the Tax Institute to communicate directly with tax professionals in a discussion-based format. The ATO Round Table involved a series of questions and answers covering an array of current technical issues of importance to tax professionals. Following the convention, the questions and answers will be published and will provide practical guidance on the ATO’s position on these topical areas.

Prof Gordon Cooper
Gordon was a Chartered Accountant in sole practice at Cooper & Co. He was an Adjunct Professor in the School of Taxation and Business Law (incorporating the Australian School of Taxation) at the University of New South Wales. In June 2003, he was awarded an AM in the Queen’s birthday honours for “Services to the tax profession and to the community as an adviser on national taxation and legislative reform, and through education and professional organisations”. Together with Chris Evans and Kirk Wilson, he was an author of the Australian CGT Handbook. - Current at 27 June 2017

Kirsten Fish CTA
Photo of author, Kirsten FISH Kirsten Fish is currently acting Second Commissioner for Law Design and Practice in the ATO since October 2020. In this role, Kirsten is responsible for leading the Law Design and Practice Group including Policy, Analysis and Legislation, Review and Dispute Resolution and the Tax Counsel Network divisions. Kirsten’s substantive role is as the ATO’s Chief Tax Counsel, one of the highest legal authorities within the ATO, leading the Tax Counsel Network and providing technical leadership in relation to significant tax issues, cases and rulings. Kirsten also previously held roles such as Deputy Commissioner in Small Business as well as in Strategy and Support in Service Delivery within the ATO. Before joining the ATO, Kirsten was a tax Partner at Clayton Utz with a focus on the financial services industry and providing finance and investment transaction advice. - Current at 15 April 2021

Andrew Mills CTA-Life
Photo of author, Andrew MILLS Andrew is the Director, Tax Policy and Technical at the Tax Institute, a Senior Fellow at Melbourne University Law School and a member of the Tax and Transfer Policy Institute Advisory Board. Previously, Andrew was the Second Commissioner, Law Design & Practice, at the Australian Taxation Office from 2013 - 2019. Andrew has 40 years’ experience in taxation, including periods in the ATO, commerce and the tax profession. Andrew was a Director at Greenwoods & Freehills for more than 20 years and managing director of the firm from 2006 to 2011. Andrew was President of The Tax Institute in 2006–2007 and is a former Governor of the Taxation Research Foundation. In practice, Andrew was an active participant and representative of a number of industry bodies and a lecturer in the taxation in the Masters program at Sydney Law School. Andrew holds a Bachelor of Business, a Master of Laws and a Graduate Diploma in Tax Law. Andrew is a Chartered Taxation Adviser (Life), a member of the Australian Executive Committee of the International Fiscal Association and a graduate of the Australian Institute of Company Directors. - Current at 03 November 2020
