The Tax Institute will be out of the blocks more than a month before the Federal Government’s October taxation forum by staging its own event, The Great Tax Debate: Constructing Tomorrow’s Tax System.
Key independent MP, Rob Oakeshott, and Opposition Assistant Treasurer, Senator Mathias Cormann, have so far accepted invitations to speak at the event in Sydney on 31 August.
Also on the agenda are:
- Greg Smith, former Henry Review panellist and current Adjunct Professor, Economic and Social Policy, Australian Catholic University;
- Henry Ergas, Senior Economic Adviser, Deloitte Access Economics;
- Dr Cassandra Goldie, Chief Executive Officer of the Australian Council of Social Service and;
- Adam Creighton, Research Fellow, Economics Program, at the Centre for Independent Studies.
The Tax Institute’s Senior Tax Counsel, Robert Jeremenko, said The Great Debate was a lead-in to the Government’s own two-day Tax Forum in October, not a replacement.
“The Great Tax Debate is an essential part of harnessing the momentum of the Henry review and kick-starting the conversation that Australia has to have” Mr Jeremenko said.
“The Government’s discussion paper and commitment to host a Tax Forum are a start.
“But we have long advocated for a structured approach and preparatory work to ensure a blueprint for tax reform is set and implemented.
“The Great Tax Debate will make a significant contribution to the reform discussion.
The event will consist of presentations by key players followed by a panel discussion and is being held in conjunction with the Australian Tax Research Foundation.
Topics on the table for discussion are architecture of the tax system, personal tax (including retirement and superannuation), business tax, indirect tax (including GST), compliance and reform processes.
