Key industry leaders to address key issues for tax professionals and broader business community

Canberra – 12 March, 2012: The future of Australian taxation, including key areas for reform, will be discussed and debated when Australia’s leading tax professionals converge on Canberra on Wednesday, 14 March for the 27th National Convention of The Tax Institute.

The convention takes place in the midst of a hung federal parliament and a contentious legislative agenda for the Gillard Government.  As such the convention will address the most important tax issues affecting Australia in 2012 and into the future.

Ken Schurgott, President of The Tax Institute, said now is an important time to discuss the future of tax in Australia.

“Despite global economic uncertainty and its flow-on effects for the Australian economy, it’s crucial our political leaders don’t avoid the hard work needed on the policy formulation required to improve our tax system.

“The Tax Institute and our tax professional members are best placed to provide insights into the challenges faced across the country and the opportunities to improve tax policy outcomes for all Australians,” said Mr Schurgott.

This year’s event will feature keynote addresses from Federal Treasurer Wayne Swan, Chief Justice of the High Court Robert French, and ATO Commissioner, Michael D’Ascenzo .

Among the topics discussed will be the implications for business and tax professionals in areas such as: consolidation; trust reform; international tax rules and tax havens; superannuation and general tax advice for business.
