Wanyue Fang, CA, Director, WANYUE FANG & CO, Melbourne
From software developer to chartered accountant and firm director, Wanyue Fang's tax journey is driven by curiosity, discipline and a love of the law.

Wanyue Fang, the Dux of CommLaw1 Australian Legal Systems for Study Period 2 2025, did not set out to work in tax. She began her career in software development in China in 2012, before gradually moving into accounting and finance, then tax in 2019. Today she is a chartered accountant, registered tax agent, and Director of her own Melbourne-based practice, WANYUE FANG & CO

The journey between those two points reflects a professional who has consistently sought out complexity rather than shied away from it. Tax drew Wanyue in for a specific reason: it sits at the intersection of law and accounting, two disciplines she finds genuinely compelling.

"Tax is a fundamental element of the evolving financial and business world. It is a complex system grounded in law and accounting. As an accounting professional with a strong interest in law, I was naturally drawn to tax. I enjoy the challenge of applying technical knowledge to real-world situations and helping clients navigate this intricate system."

That instinct for complexity now shapes her daily work. The most rewarding part of her role, she says, is "diving deep into tax law and applying rulings to each client's specific situation" and translating dense regulation into practical outcomes for clients.

CommLaw1 Australian Legal Systems was Wanyue's final subject in the Graduate Diploma of Applied Tax Law, which she undertook after establishing her own practice. The subject aligned closely with her long-standing interest in law.

"The most interesting part of CommLaw1 was reading the commentary, cases, and legislative releases, which provided insight into how the law operates in practice."

The knowledge gained was not merely academic. Wanyue has since applied her understanding of Australian contract law and remedies for breach of contract directly to practice management and client engagement processes, strengthening the foundations of her firm.

Across all her studies with The Tax Institute, it is the practical orientation that Wanyue values most.

"The best part of studying with The Tax Institute Higher Education has been the practical focus of the programs. The content is directly applicable to real-world tax work, and I particularly value the integration of case studies, legislative analysis, commentary, webinars, and supporting study materials."

Balancing study with running a practice required the same discipline she brings to client work. She scheduled dedicated study blocks each week and treated learning as an integral part of her professional life rather than an addition to it.

Her advice to other tax professionals is direct: "I would encourage other tax professionals to consider further study with The Tax Institute. The programs have been valuable in deepening technical knowledge and developing practical skills, and actively applying what has been learnt makes the experience even more rewarding."

Now, Wanyue plans to set her sights considerably higher. She is developing research proposals with a view to pursuing a PhD in tax law, and exploring opportunities to contribute to publications including our own Taxation in Australia and the Australian Tax Forum.

For someone who began her career writing code, the destination is a long way from the starting point. The thread connecting them is a mind that has always been drawn to systems, structures, and the satisfaction of making them work.
