Darren Tappouras, Senior Tax Partner, Financial First Partners

Darren Tappouras, Dux for CommLaw 1 in Study Period 3 2025 and a senior tax partner at Financial First Partners in Sydney explains why higher education still matters after more than two decades in the profession.

With 26 years in tax, a Bachelor of Accounting and a Master of Commerce from UNE, and a hand in one of the profession's most-used tools, he is not an obvious candidate for returning to the classroom. Yet here he is, closing in on completing the Graduate Diploma of Australian Tax Law (GDATL).

How a systems analyst became a tax partner

Darren's career didn't begin in tax. After graduating, he worked in systems analysis, logistics and consulting, where he found himself regularly working alongside tax lawyers and specialists. The interaction stuck. "I found myself working alongside tax lawyers and tax specialists and found my interaction with them to be very interesting."

A role in a small public practice followed, and with it came immediate exposure to corporate taxation, superannuation and the full range of small business tax issues.

"This totally resonated with me and I have focused on this ever since."

The draw, he says, has always been straightforward. "I love solving problems and using logic. I gravitated towards tax early after graduation and found it very fulfilling and rewarding."

The man who helped invent the Tax Agent Portal

Ask Darren about his career highlight and he doesn't point to a client win or a landmark case. He points to butchers' paper. In the late 1990s, the ATO invited him to a residential retreat with a group of high-volume tax return lodgers to brainstorm new ideas.

"A few colleagues and I came up with the idea of a Tax Agent Portal, as all ATO interaction was done on the phone before that. We documented the whole concept on butchers' paper and felt that this could really change the way the profession interacted with the ATO."

The idea was eventually implemented.

"I like to boast to my graduate trainees that I was 'responsible' for the Portal. They usually roll their eyes. Yes, boomer! But it really has been a major innovation in our industry, even if I played a small part in it."

Why study now?

With 26 years of experience behind him, Darren has recently added lecturing and high school teaching in Business Studies and Legal Studies to his portfolio. It was that shift that prompted him to pursue the GDATL.

"I looked at doing the Graduate Diploma at The Tax Institute to enhance and obtain some specific taxation qualification."

The content has delivered in unexpected ways.

"I love the actual legal cases. This is high drama for nerds like me."

More practically, the subject has given him a deeper grounding in the Australian legal system, knowledge he has been able to apply directly in his teaching and lecturing roles.

Making it work

Fitting formal study around a senior partnership and a teaching schedule is no small feat.

"You just have to set aside time and commit to getting through the material and working on your assessments. You can do it."

The flexibility of The Tax Institute's online learning environment helped.

"I was able to study anywhere, even in airports."

What's next

Darren is on track to complete the GDATL this year. He is enthusiastic enough about the experience to have one piece of constructive feedback: he would welcome a Tax Institute master's in taxation.

"I would be more likely to continue with TIHE than having to go to another institution and get to know their LMS and methods." It is, in its own way, a compliment.

His advice to anyone sitting on the fence? Typically direct: "Just get it done. You will be very happy you did it."
