Cedric Sandford (1924-2004) - Gentleman and Scholar

In 1728 in The Complete English Gentleman Daniel Defoe noted a distinction between the gentleman and the scholar, suggesting the essential qualities of both were unlikely to be found in one person. With respect, Defoe got it wrong. The life of Emeritus Professor Cedric Sandford, who died recently at the age of 79, shows how the qualities of both the gentleman and the scholar can be successfully combined in one person.
